le mans 2 ignition timing ??

hi i am just about to set the ignition timing on a lm2 from what i can gather D and S are the top dead center marks are they ??? in the haynes manual (yes i know its a haynes but thats all i have ) it tells you to first of all get no 1 on compression stroke turn to the D mark and then turn past clockwise until the next index line appears. i take it they mean clockwise looking from the front but then surely the ignition sparks after top dead center then ?? can any one shed some light thanks Kev
