hi i am almost at the end of my guzzi le mans 2 project which is up and running now but the generator light will not go out i have looked at the wiring on the alternator and there is no wire to the terminal marked D- i only have a haynes manual with a lm 1 wiring diagram does any one know if they are the same. in the diagram D-goes to earth is this correct ? and does anyone have any info on testing the charging system please help its driving me mad
Most of the 850/1000cc Guzzis of that vintage share the same Bosche alternator and (probably) similar wiring. The LM1 diagram should work fine for you to trouble shoot.
The 3 main charging system components are the rectifier assy, the mechanical regulator, and the stator and rotor on the crank nose. The stator/rotor should have a 3 wire connector (for the three phase windings of the stator) and a single wire to the brush assembly of the rotor slip rings. I dont know if this is marked D-1 or what, but without current to excite the rotor, you will never get a charge.
The Haynes manual doesn't have much in the way of electrical trouble shooting help. The Guzzi repair manual for the V-1000 G-5/SP is better, if you can get ahold of one. Try the GUZZI TECH website. They have links to some manuals and EWD info. Good luck.
many thanks John this is the first guzzi i have done so any help is great . i am amazed how small it is compaired to my laverdas afriend of mine had a v7 i think it was, black with diagonal red stripes down the tank and wire wheels it was beautiful when he died i had the chance of both of his bikes the other being an early laverda 3c with wire wheels. i had the lav and wish i could have found the money for the guzzi also. once again many thanks Kev
